Moissanite Advantages
- Moissanite is lab created with minimal impact on the environment.
- Moissanite is cheaper per carat than many other gemstones.
- Moissanite has a Mohs hardness of 9.25, second only to diamond and higher than other gemstones. So suitable for everyday wear.
What is Moissanite?
Very similar in appearance to diamonds, moissanite is sometimes referred to as a diamond simulant and is designed to give the illusion of being similar to a diamond, but is compositionally distinct from a real diamond. The two gemstones are very different in their durability, brilliance and color.
Moissanite vs. Diamond
Moissanite | Diamond | |
Durability | On the Mohs scale, Moissanite gemstones are a 9.25 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, so they are suitable for daily wear. | Diamonds are the hardest known mineral and receive a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Because of this exceptional score, diamonds are very durable and ideal for daily wear. This contributes to their popularity as engagement rings’ center gemstones. |
Brilliance | Moissanite exhibits a different brilliance than diamonds because of their facets mode is different. Moissanite is beloved for its fiery rainbow-like sparkle. Some, but others believe that Moissanite’s highlights can create a kind of “disco” “ball” effect, especially in sunlight. The bigger the moissanite, the more likely it is the difference will be obvious. Moissanite has a refractive index of 2.65 –2.69, higher than natural diamonds. | A different type of brilliance makes it possible to distinguish moissanite from diamonds. Diamonds reflect light in three different ways. The white light reflected back is called brightness, while the iridescent colors refracted through the diamond are called dispersion. The surface sparkle of a diamond, called scintillation, is the third type of diamond light return. The combination of these three gives diamonds their famous brilliance. |
Color | While moissanites are labeled as “colorless”, the gems can still project a yellow or grayish hue in certain lights. Here again, the larger the moissanite, the more noticeable the color. | A colorless diamond, whether natural or lab created, has a natural body color that contains no traces of yellow, brown, or grey, resulting in a dazzling, bright white appearance. |
Price | For the same size from the top view, moissanites are dramatically lower in pricing than diamonds of that size. Moissanite gems typically vary in price only based on size and whether the stone is Premium or Super Premium. | Natural diamonds and lab created diamond prices vary based on shape, carat, cut, color, and clarity. Lab created diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds. |
Sourcing | Because moissanites are lab created, they are an appealing option for those seeking an eco-conscious gemstone as they require no mining. | We go above and beyond the current industry standards to offer both Beyond Conflict Free ™ Diamonds that have been selected for their ethical and environmentally responsible origins, as well as lab created diamonds that are ethically grown with minimal environmental impact. |
Selecting Moissanite
Moissanite vs. Diamond is different, diamonds are graded using the GIA evaluation criteria, which are the 4Cs of diamonds. Moissanite grading is based on the 4Cs of diamonds, but it is indeed different from diamond grading.
The general moissanite grading only uses color grading, because the clarity and cut of moissanite of different qualities are not much different. The cheap price is also one of the reasons why it is different from diamond grading.
Since there is no universal quality evaluation standard for moissanite, there will also be some products that are not worthy of the name on the market. Therefore, it is particularly important to choose a reliable moissanite supplier.
AuGain Gem supplies real moissanite, colorless(DEF range), near colorless(GHI range) and with faint hues of color(JK range) moissanite. Contact us for a free quote.
Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds are more affordable than naturally mined diamonds – you can usually save about 30% on a diamond of similar size and quality. Unlike moissanite, lab-grown diamonds have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds. They have the same flash, flame and flicker properties. What’s more, they are an attractive option for those looking for eco-friendly gems because they don’t require mining.
