What is loose Moissanite?
Moissanite is a gem born from the stars. It was first discovered in 1893 by a French scientist named Henri Moissan, who later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He found the microscopic grains of the gem that eventually bears his name in a crater in Arizona that fell to Earth. He initially thought he had discovered diamonds, but later determined that the crystals were made of silicon carbide. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so the moissanite available today is lab-made. After years of trial and error, the particles Moissan discovered were successfully synthesized to produce one of the brightest gemstones to appear in the world.
The popular moissanite
Moissanite is so similar to diamond that many people can't tell what is diamond and what is moissanite, giving the illusion of being the same as diamond, but completely different from real diamond in composition. Moissanite has a Mohs hardness of 9.25-9.5, second only to diamond, but the fire is indeed more brilliant than diamond. Like diamonds, moissanite is widely loved in high-end jewelry such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
Selecting Loose Moissanite
While diamonds are graded on the 4 C’s (Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut) , moissanite is graded solely on color. The cut and clarity grade is similar across different qualities of moissanite. At AuGain Gem, we supply D EF GH IJ color moissanite and colored moissanite(grey, black, yellow, champagne, green, blue, pink, etc).
Why Choose Moissanite Diamonds?
Moissanite provides a compelling alternative for those who prioritize affordability, durability, and ethical considerations without sacrificing beauty and sparkle.
Cost
Moissanite diamonds are significantly less expensive than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. They offer a more affordable alternative without compromising on the beauty and brilliance of the stone.
Brilliance and Fire
Moissanite has exceptional brilliance and fire, meaning it reflects light extremely well and exhibits a dazzling sparkle. Its optical properties often surpass those of natural diamonds, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a brilliant gemstone.
Durability
Moissanite is a very durable gemstone, scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is second only to diamonds, which score a perfect 10. This hardness makes moissanite suitable for everyday wear, ensuring it can withstand scratches and abrasions.
Ethical Considerations:
Moissanite is a lab-grown gemstone, which means it is not mined from the Earth. This eliminates concerns about the environmental impact and unethical mining practices associated with natural diamonds. If ethical sourcing is important to you, moissanite provides a conflict-free alternative.
Color Options
While moissanite is known for its colorless variety, it also comes in a range of colors, including yellow, green, blue, and gray. This offers more options for personalization and allows you to choose a stone that suits your preferences.
Availability
Natural diamonds are limited in quantity and availability, which can affect their pricing and availability in certain sizes and shapes. Moissanite, on the other hand, can be consistently produced in large quantities, ensuring a reliable supply for those who choose this gemstone.
